What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea happens when you snore. Snoring is caused by the vibrations of your soft and/or hard tissue palates as you breathe during sleep. Vibration occurs when air passages become increasingly narrow and airflow becomes more forceful. This causes the vibration to increase, which in turn results in louder snoring. Loud snorers may have a more serious case of blocked air passages, known as apnea.

Sleep apnea, meaning “without breath,” occurs when you experience episodes of obstructed breathing during sleep. This condition can be diagnosed by a sleep study. Dr. Savage is qualified to prescribe appliances that are customized to relieve apnea and snoring. The proper device can move the lower jaw forward to increase the space in airways and reduce the force in the flow of air that produces the snoring and apnea.
