You just got your braces placed. What happens now? We’ve compiled the following tips to help you get used to your new braces.
For the first few days, your teeth and gums may feel tender and sore. To help reduce inflammation, take over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol or Advil. It’s also a good idea to limit yourself to softer foods and take smaller bites until your teeth feel better again.
Eating with Braces
A good rule of thumb is to avoid hard, sticky, and chewy foods. This includes candy such as Starburst, caramel, full apples, corn on the cob, chips, pizza crust, nuts, and ice.
We also recommend avoiding sugary foods and drinks as these foods can break down your orthodontic appliances and increase cavities.
Practicing good oral hygiene is even more important throughout orthodontic treatment. Be sure to brush after every meal using a fluoride toothpaste and floss. You may wish to use a Water Pik to help remove plaque in hard-to-reach areas. In addition, remember to schedule your dental checkups every six months.
If you experience a broken or loose wire, you may place a piece of wax over the protruding appliance. If you’re unable to move the broken piece back to its correct position, contact our office immediately. We will find a time to fit you in to our schedule and fix your orthodontic appliance. A broken appliance can mean a longer treatment time, so don’t delay!
